FHSAA announces academic team champions for winter sports

Palm Beach County had quite a few representatives on the FHSAA’s academic team champions list for winter sports.

Here’s a bit more information on what the academic champions can actually get if the school’s other teams maintain academic excellence. From the FHSAA release:

For the first time ever, the FHSAA will be awarding year-end overall Academic Team Champion in each of the six classes. Points will be given for where a school places in each of the categories, similar to the All-Sports Awards. The top 10 schools in each category will receive points. Ten points will be awarded for a first place finish, nine points for second, etc.

The school in each class with the highest cumulative point total for the entire school year will get a special award. Points awarded for teams in single-class sports will still count toward the overall standings. The link for the standings after the winter sports is below.

So let’s look at the winners from each sport and class. Area teams are bolded.

Jupiter’s 1-0 win over Palm Beach Gardens on Friday night propelled the Warriors into the top spot in Class 6A, despite a loss earlier in the week to Pembroke Pines Charter. Gardens is third and Park Vista, which plays Gardens on Friday, is fifth.

2011 football schedules for Palm Beach County public schools

$

The last square on the grid has been filled, old rivalries will be renewed and new ones will be created: The 2011 Palm Beach County football season is coming into focus.

Where the magic happens.

Where the magic happens.

Palm Beach County Athletic Administrator Yetta Greene has the unenviable task of solidifying football schedules for the 23 schools in the Palm Beach County Athletic Conference, which consists of the county’s public schools plus Cardinal Newman High. It’s a process that begins with a lot of requests and ends with a lot of compromise.

It’s not as simple as taking last year’s schedules and flipping the home/away teams. Because the FHSAA re-orders district assignments every two years, new district games must be created. Some schools wish to play out-of-area teams and many have preference of their non-district opponents. That leaves Greene to solve a challenging puzzle before schedules are to be submitted to the FHSAA March 31.

“Everyone got some of what they asked for, but no one got everything they asked for,” Greene said, jokingly calling today “complain-about-everything day.”

One request that was granted came from the schools in the new Class 8A. After this year’s FHSAA redistricting, Palm Beach County now has two 8A districts. Since teams in those districts could meet in the first round of the regional playoffs, the schools requested that 8A district games be played before Week 11.

Scanning the schedule, Week 1 should be one to remember. Dwyer travels to Glades Central after the teams took a year off from playing each other, Atlantic hosts another outstanding young team in American Heritage, West Boca Raton hosts crosstown rival Boca Raton and Santaluces welcomes (if you can call it that) Park Vista.

Some other matchups to watch include Seminole Ridge at Dwyer on Sept. 16, King’s Academy at Cardinal Newman and Suncoast at Palm Beach Lakes on Sept. 30, and Suncoast at Glades Central on Oct. 7, in which new Chargers coach Jessie Hester returns to face his alma mater. The Muck Bowl, Pahokee at Glades Central, will be played Nov. 11.

2011 Palm Beach Athletic Conference Football Schedules
All games are Friday, 7 p.m. until further notice. Some games of Oct. 7 may be moved to Thursday, Oct. 6 because of Yom Kippur, and some games may be moved to Thursday because of ESPN 760-AM’s Game of the Week. *Asterisk denotes district game.

Football: Cardinal Newman’s Stenz, Jupiter Christian’s Garland sign scholarships

A couple football recruiting updates to pass along on a gorgeous Friday afternoon:

Cardinal Newman LB/OL Phil Stenz signed with Catholic University of America (Washington, D.C.). Stenz was a captain for the Crusaders.

Jupiter Christian two-way lineman Drew Garland signed with Bethel University in Tennessee. Five of Jupiter Christian’s seven 2011 seniors have signed football scholarships, head coach Bill Powers said.

That should become six in the next two weeks, Powers added. Powers’ son Ryan, a first-team All-Area linebacker, is weighing scholarship offers from Cushing Academy (Mass.) and Proctor Academy (N.H.). Both are New England prep schools.

Jupiter, Grandview ranked first in new Miracle Sports class-by-class rankings

Very similar rankings compared to last week’s Miracle Sports high school softball poll. The county’s two No. 1 teams, Grandview and Jupiter, hung on to their top spots.

Okeechobee certainly earned some voting respect with a 1-0 win over Palm Beach Gardens at the Kissimmee Klassic this past weekend, but dropped a spot in the Class 4A rankings. Granted, the scoring runner got two of her four bases on errors, but a win is a win. It was enough to move Okeechobee up in my own Post area rankings.

Baseball: Cardinal Newman’s Kokinda two wins from 700

As he approaches a magical mark, the winningest coach in Palm Beach County history received some unexpected help.

Cardinal Newman baseball coach Jack Kokinda and his team were informed this week that their March 10 loss to Clewiston now a forfeit. Kokinda now has 698 wins in his 41-year career.

Clewiston self-reported an ineligible player, Cardinal Newman Athletic Director Alan Botkin said.
The Crusaders (5-14) travel to Spanish River Wednesday and host Glades Central Thursday.

The 64-year-old Kokinda, a 2003 Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame inductee and 16-time district champion, has a career record of 698-514-6. He began coaching at Cardinal Newman in 1969-70, shortly after graduating from Butler University.

Grandview first in 1A, Park Vista second in 6A in new state softball poll

The new Miracle Sports class-by-class softball poll was released Sunday night, and it had a few changes from last week’s rankings.

While Grandview Prep held its top spot in Class 1A, Jupiter dropped from first to sixth in the 6A rankings. Park Vista jumped up to second and Palm Beach Gardens fell to fourth.

Wellington moved up a spot in 5A, and did itself some favors by playing Park Vista tough. Meanwhile in 4A, Okeechobee fell all the way from third to 10th after Eau Gallie swept the Brahmans.

Plantation-American Heritage and Miami-Gulliver Prep have shown why they’re the top two teams in 3A (and maybe the state) with wins over Palm Beach County’s best in recent weeks.

The American Heritage in our county moved back into the Class 2A rankings at No. 10 thanks to a three-win week, and Grandview held its spot atop the Class 1A poll.

Softball: District playoff schedules, seedings set for next week

$
0
0

We know the final standings and who plays when during next week’s district playoffs. Here’s the breakdown.

Admission to each game, regardless of venue, is $5. District tournament hosts are predetermined by the FHSAA, and some district tournaments will be held at neutral sites. Anyway, here’s every single district that features a Palm Beach County or T-Coast team.

At the end of each schedule, I’ve popped in a “quick swing,” which is a horrible nickname for some quick analysis of each bracket.

Seeds in parentheses

CLASS 6A

District 6

Monday
Kissimmee-Gateway (5) at Palm Bay-Bayside (4), 4 p.m.

Tuesday
At Lawnwood Stadium
Vero Beach (2) vs. Treasure Coast (3), 5
Centennial (1) vs. Bayside/Gateway winner, 7

Thursday
At Lawnwood Stadium
Championsip, 7

Quick swing: Centennial is the favorite because it has seven players batting better than .300. There’s a long way to go before it could happen, but it’s hard not to get excited about the Eagles potentially playing one of the District 9-6A in the state semifinals down the line.

District 9
All games at Palm Beach Gardens

Monday
Park Vista (2) vs. Santaluces (7), 5 p.m.
Palm Beach Gardens (1) vs. Boca Raton (8), 7

Tuesday
Palm Beach Central (4) vs. Seminole Ridge (5), 5
Jupiter (3) vs. Royal Palm Beach (6), 7

Thursday
Jupiter/Royal Palm Beach winner vs. Park Vista/Santaluces winner, 5
Palm Beach Gardens/Boca Raton winner vs. Palm Beach Central/Seminole Ridge winner, 7

Friday
Championship, 7

Quick swing: Gardens is the favorite because it’s home and has the experience of winning state titles, but this bracket is wide open. Jupiter beat Gardens at home, Park Vista beat Jupiter, and Gardens beat Park Vista. Toss in two wild cards in Palm Beach Central and Seminole Ridge, and this could be the best district tournament of them all. Lots of great pitching.

CLASS 5A

District 14
All games at Port St. Lucie

Tuesday
Sebastian River (1) vs. South Fork (4), 5 p.m.

Wednesday
Martin County (2) vs. Port St. Lucie (3), 5

Friday
Championship, 5

Quick swing: Martin County and Port St. Lucie have been struggling of late, and Sebastian River is the clear frontrunner.

District 15
All games at John I. Leonard

Monday
Dwyer (1) vs. Palm Beach Lakes (8), 4:30 p.m.
Wellington (2) vs. John I. Leonard (7), 7

Tuesday
West Boca Raton (4) vs. Lake Worth (5), 4:30
Spanish River (3) vs. Forest Hill (6), 7

Wednesday
Wellington-John I. Leonard winner vs. Spanish River-Forest Hill winner, 4:30
Dwyer-Palm Beach Lakes winner vs. West Boca-Lake Worth winner, 7

Thursday
Championship, 7

Quick swing: Oof. Another tough district. Wellington has been playing very well all season, rising as high as second in the area top 10, but the Wolverines have to get past their Dwyer curse. That’s what makes this a tough district to pick: Each of the top four seeds has a legitimate chance to win it, and this field is wide open.

CLASS 4A

District 14

Monday
Lincoln Park (4) vs. Fort Pierce Central (5), 6 p.m., Lawnwood Stadium
Boynton Beach (7) at Jensen Beach (2), 6
Fort Pierce Westwood (6) at Suncoast (3), 7

Tuesday
At Lawnwood Stadium
Suncoast-Fort Pierce Westwood winner vs. Jensen Beach-Boynton Beach winner, 5
Lincoln Park-Fort Pierce Central winner vs. Okeechobee (1), 7

Thursday
At Lawnwood Stadium
Championship, 7

Quick swings: Suncoast has some boppers and Jensen Beach has been playing great ball lately, but Okeechobee might be one of the most underrated teams in the state. Sam Harrell is as good as any pitcher around, and she can lead the Brahmans to the states.

District 15
All games at Southwest Ranches-Archbishop McCarthy

Monday
Olympic Heights (5) vs. Fort Lauderdale (4), 4 p.m.
Archbishop McCarthy (3) vs. Stranahan (6), 7

Tuesday
Archbishop McCarthy/Stranahan winner vs. Cardinal Gibbons, 4
Olympic Heights/Fort Lauderdale winner vs. Pembroke Pines Charter, 7

Thursday
Championship, 7

Quick swing: Olympic Heights has a promising young group, but this district is loaded. If the Lions get past Fort Lauderdale, they’ll get Pembroke Pines Charter, one of the top teams in the state.

CLASS 3A

District 13
All games at Clewiston

Tuesday
Clewiston (2) vs. St. Andrew’s (3), 3:30 p.m.
Cardinal Newman (1) vs. Glades Central (4), 6

Thursday
Championship, 5

Quick swing: Cardinal Newman has the district’s three best hitters in Casen Love, Rachel Rendina and Peyton Finlayson. Clewiston and St. Andrew’s should be a good game.

CLASS 2A

District 13

Monday
John Carroll (5) at Benjamin (4), 4 p.m.
Jupiter Christian (6) at Glades Day (3), 4
Pope John Paul II (7) at American Heritage (2), 7

Tuesday
At Benjamin
American Heritage/Pope John Paul winner vs. Glades Day/Jupiter Christian, 2
King’s Academy (1) vs. Benjamin/John Carroll winner, 4

Thursday
At Benjamin
Championship, 4

Quick swing: This is a very competitive group, too. Glades Day’s Brianna Lohmann is the best hitter among small-schools players. Benjamin’s freshman catcher Arden Pettit is already a star. King’s Academy pitcher Aubree Murphy willed her team to a regular-season district title. And then American Heritage is probably the favorite, being the winners of the past three district titles.

CLASS 1A

District 12
All games at Seminole Palms Park

Tuesday
Trinity Christian (3) vs. Wellington Christian (2), 3:30

Thursday
Berean Christian (1) vs. Trinity Christian/Wellington Christian winner, 4

Quick swing: Berean Christian P Amber Johnson has been awesome this year, and anything less than a district title would be surprising.

District 13
All games at Lake Worth Christian

Monday
Grandview Prep (1) vs. Summit Christian (4), 3 p.m.
Lake Worth Christian (2) vs. Boca Raton Christian (3), 5

Thursday
Championship, 5

Quick swing: Can Grandview start another run to the Class 1A state final? Jane Sallen has put together a solid season of her own, too.

Park Vista ranked in Miracle Sports all-class poll, Grandview tops in Class 1A

The regular season is over and the final class-by-class rankings are in. And Miracle Sports treated us to an all-classes poll, too.

I’m a little surprised that Park Vista has been ranked ahead of Palm Beach Gardens in the final poll, and that the Gators were left out of the all-classes top 10 all together. Palm Beach Gardens has played a significantly tougher schedule and has better pitching, although the cancellation of a tournament left Park Vista out in the cold earlier this year, which is why the Cobras have only played 21 games. In fairness, Park Vista’s lineup has been hitting extremely well all year.

Park Vista is third in the Class 6A poll, with Gardens fourth and Jupiter sixth. The Cobras dropped a spot, while Gardens held serve at No. 4 and Jupiter stayed at 6. Centennial has jumped into this week’s poll, right at No. 10.

Wellington is still seventh in the 5A poll, but the Wolverines have to get over the Dwyer curse before they can claim the crown as the county’s best 5A team.

In 4A, Okeechobee stayed in the No. 10 spot. The Brahmans have a great chance to make a run in the regionals and states, especially if Sam Harrell gets hot. American Heritage has been playing very well lately, overcoming a slow start to finish the season 15-9. The Stallions have a tough field in the 13-2A district playoffs, but they’re the favorite.

And Grandview is still in that No. 1 spot. Can the Pride make a run back to the state finals?

Softball: Previewing the regional matchups in each class

$

0

There are still a few more regional brackets to be filled out, mostly in Class 6A, but let’s run down the local matchups that are already set.

Grandview Prep and Palm Beach Gardens looked primed to make another run to the state semifinals in Clermont. Park Vista will certainly make things interesting for Gardens. Centennial also has a great shot, along with American Heritage, Wellington and Dwyer.

A few other teams are lurking as wild cards — Berean Christian, King’s Academy — and surely others will surprise. Here’s a breakdown of each game. We’ll fill in the 6A stuff as it comes out.

CLASS 1A

Grandview Prep vs. Pompano Beach-Highlands Christian
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Lake Charleston Park
Who to Watch: Grandview P Jane Sallen (10-3, 1.25 ERA), Geena Capitini (.484), Allie Catapano (.451)

Highlands Christian has a solid leading hitter in Samantha Hyman (.509) and two good pitchers, but Grandview Prep has designs on a return trip to the state finals. The Pride needs its boppers — Capitini and Catapano — to get some offense for Sallen. Grandview has the tools to get to Clermont.

Lake Worth Christian at Hollywood Christian
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Hollywood Christian
Who to Watch: LWC’s Jessica Golden (.462), Mackenzie Morrell (.448); HC’s Lorena Spaulding (.678)

Don’t rub your eyes or question your sanity: That batting average for Spaulding is correct. Meanwhile Lake Worth Christian took last year off from the states after making the semifinals three years in a row from 2007 to 2009. The Defenders have a tough road to get back there.

Wellington Christian at Vero Beach-Master’s
When: Tuesday, 4 p.m.
Where: Master’s Academy
Who to Watch: Wellington Christian’s Amanda Dill (.541), P Alexa Elkins (11-8, 3.95 ERA)

This is Wellington Christian’s second trip to the regionals after making a brief stop in 2008. This regional group is brutal, with two of the top four teams in Class 1A on one side, and Berean Christian on the other. Should be a tough road.

Berean Christian vs. Brevard HEAT
When: Tuesday, 4 p.m.
Where: Seminole Palms Park
Who to Watch: Berean Christian P Amber Johnson (9-7, 0.83 ERA)

Like I said about Wellington Christian, this is an extremely tough region for Berean, too. St. Petersburg-Cantebury and Sarasota Christian are top-four teams in the Miracle Sports Class 1A poll. Johnson has been great all season and coach Phil Johnson says she can be the stud Berean needs to make a run.

CLASS 2A

American Heritage vs. Fort Lauderdale-Westminster
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: American Heritage
Who to Watch: American Heritage P Chelsea Brandt (8-4, 0.56 ERA), OF Marissa Mangini (.458)

Heritage has come on late in the season, narrowly losing to No. 2 Park Vista before winning the district title for the fourth year in a row. Brandt has looked strong in her recent outings, and the Stallions will need to be dominant. The lineup is good, and an impending matchup with King’s in the regional semis should be another doozy.

King’s Academy at Fort Lauderdale-Calvary Christian
When: Wednesday, 4 p.m.
Where: Calvary Christian
Who to Watch: King’s Academy’s P Aubree Murphy (12-8-1, 1.31 ERA), Kristen Wright (.530)

This has to be one of the best pitching matchups among the smaller classes. Calvary Christian’s Katia Gottfried (12-7, 1.47 ERA) vs. Murphy, who is the main reason King’s won the regular-season district title and made regionals. The possibility of a pitching rematch between Murphy and American Heritage’s Chelsea Brandt in the regional semis would make for good viewing, but both teams to get by tough first-round opponents first.

CLASS 3A

Cardinal Newman vs. Pompano Beach
When: Tuesday, 4 p.m.
Where: Cardinal Newman
Who to Watch: Cardinal Newman P Casen Love (13-8-1; hitting .494, 34 RBI), SS Rachel Rendina (.519), 1B Peyton Finlayson (.466, 36 RBI)

Newman stormed through its district tournament as expected and gets a home game in the regional quarters as a result. There isn’t a ton of information out there on Pompano Beach, other than that it made the district final in a tough grouping. Plantation-American Heritage, which is one of the best teams in the state, mercy-ruled Pompano in the final. Newman should get by Pompano and could see P-AH in the second round.

St. Andrew’s at Plantation-American Heritage
When: Tuesday, 5 p.m.
Where: Tera Ross Memorial Softball Field (American Heritage)
Who to Watch: St. Andrew’s Caitlin Grecz (.581), AH’s Bailey Castro (.618)

Safe to say this would be a tall order for any team. American Heritage beat Palm Beach Gardens, Park Vista and Jupiter, the three best teams in the area. Bailey Castro is one of the best hitters in the state. St. Andrew’s has a solid young team, and the Scots’ll need Caitlin Grecz to not only pitch well, but her bat has to be hot, too.

CLASS 4A

Suncoast vs. Cocoa-Space Coast
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Suncoast
Who to Watch: Suncoast P Lindsey Harris

Harris didn’t give up an earned run in the district playoffs, which saw the Chargers get through a tough bracket for the crown. Suncoast has the talent and the depth to win here.

Lincoln Park at Eau Gallie
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Eau Gallie
Who to Watch: Lincoln Park P Taylor Strickland (6-0, 1.05 ERA)

Lincoln Park shocked Okeechobee in the district semis. I thought the Brahmans had the tools to make a run to states. But they were brushed aside by the eighth-grader Strickland, who one-hit them. Strickland’s in the spotlight again on Wednesday, and LPA needs the youngster to lead the charge.

CLASS 5A

Wellington vs. Davie-Nova
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Wellington
Who to Watch: Wellington P/Flex Corrie Boggess (10-3, 1.59 ERA; hitting .377), 1B Stephanie Schmidt (.442, 24 RBI)

If Corrie Boggess can stay healthy enough to play, Wellington has a chance to run at a state title. Schmidt has been tearing the seams off the ball all year, and the Wolverines’ lineup is a tough one to navigate. If they can keep the errors down and get Boggess and freshman Remi Losey to pitch consistently well, the sky’s the limit.

Dwyer at St. Thomas Aquinas
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Where: St. Thomas Aquinas
Who to Watch: Dwyer 3B Danielle Fernandez (.552), P Mackenzie Huhn (10-6, 1.53 ERA)

The left-handed Huhn — they call her Mack — needs to power Dwyer this postseason. Fernandez is an on-base machine and Jordan English can be Dwyer’s bopper. If they put all the pieces together, the Panthers — just like Wellington — can be dangerous.

CLASS 6A

Centennial vs. Winter Garden-West Orange
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Lawnwood Stadium, Fort Pierce
Who to Watch: Centennial’s Dana Ensmenger, P Kadie Maurer

Ensmenger’s hot bat carried Centennial to a district title. The Eagles, who along with three big-name 6A teams in Palm Beach County, have been consistently ranked or near the top 10 in the Miracle Sports poll all year. They have a great shot at a state semifinal berth.

Palm Beach Gardens vs. Coral Springs-Taravella
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Palm Beach Gardens
Who to Watch: Gardens pitchers Kaylie Wallace and Shelby Turnier, 3B Kory Hayden, RF Ta’Coia Williams

Gardens has a complete lineup, fields well and has great pitching. So does Park Vista. That’s what makes the potential regional semi so enticing.

Park Vista at Parkland-Douglas
When: Wednesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Parkland-Douglas
Who to Watch: Park Vista P Laura Downs, C Jamie Gray, SS Emily Lochten

Same problem that I had with Gardens: There are so many players to watch that the list just looks too short. Great hitting. Downs has looked fantastic in her past two huge starts. And the fielding looked much improved in the 9-6A final vs. Gardens.

DISTRICT 6-6A

All games at Vero Beach
Monday, April 25
Bayside (4) vs. Gateway (5), 6
Tuesday, April 26
Bayside/Gateway vs. Centennial (1), 4
Treasure Coast (3) vs. Vero Beach (2), 7
Thursday, April 28
Final, 7

Favorite: Centennial
Contenders: Treasure Coast, Vero Beach
Bracket breakdown: How’s this for parity: Centennial beat Vero twice, Vero beat T-Coast twice, and T-Coast beat Centennial twice … Centennial coach Jamie Siminski said the bracket is tough at the bottom, too. “Even Gateway and Bayside, we’ve battled with them,” he said. “We had a 10-inning, tied-at-13 game against Gateway, which ended up winning. We ten-runned Bayside, then faced a different pitcher and won 7-6. It’s up for grabs. Do we have the upper hand because we have the No. 1 seed? It helps.” … No. 1 Centennial has the best pitching, with right-handers Ryan Fetzner (2-2, 2.30), a junior who has been the Eagles’ ace for three years, and senior Kristian Romance (2-1, 1.72). Lefty reliever Danny Ayala is strong, and mop-up man Mike Poveromo has a 1.23 ERA … Treasure Coast uses Joe Marrotta (4-1, 1.08, 45 K in 39 innings) in its opener against Vero, whose leading hitter is Alvin Swoope (.468).
Prediction: Centennial over Treasure Coast.

DISTRICT 9-6A
Monday, April 25
Royal Palm Beach (9) at Boca Raton (8), 7
Tuesday, April 26
RPB/BR (8) at Jupiter (1), 7
Park Vista (7) at Palm Beach Central (2), 4

Palm Beach Gardens (5) at Seminole Ridge (4), 7
Thursday, April 28
Semifinals at Santaluces, 7
Friday, April 29
Final at Santaluces, 7

Favorite: Jupiter
Contenders: Palm Beach Central, Santaluces
Dark horse: Palm Beach Gardens
Bracket breakdown (click links for extended team reports): Realistically, pretty much everyone in this district has a shot at regionals, in one of the most talented, balanced districts in the state … Click links for extended previews of each team. First up, Jupiter is the favorite because of its co-aces, Ryan Harris and Calvin GreenerPalm Beach Central is without ace Bobby Poyner, but should have enough offense to be there at the endSantaluces is the team no one wants to face in the first round, thanks to one special pitcher … Seminole Ridge, which has the No. 4 seed, and Palm Beach Gardens, which took No. 5, is probably the best matchup of the first round … Atlantic has surprised teams all season. Do the Eagles have another surprise in them? … Park Vista isn’t your average No. 7 seed. The Cobras could very well get to the final … Boca Raton has had a surprisingly poor record in the district, but has enough talent (and Tallet) to compete with anyone in the bracket … Royal Palm Beach faces long odds to get its first district win of the year, but won’t be down for long. Senior third baseman/DH  Justin Bryant (6 HR, 27 RBI) and was named top hitter the midseason Sarasota Baseball Classic tournament. Senior left fielder Christian Benhart is batting a team-high .359.
Prediction: Jupiter over Palm Beach Central.

DISTRICT 14-5A
Tuesday, April 26
Port St. Lucie (4) at Martin County (1), 1
Sebastian River (3) at South Fork (2), 4
Thursday, April 28
Final, 4

Favorite: Martin County
Contender: South Fork
Bracket breakdown: Defending district champ and 2009 5A state champ South Fork has to contend with Martin County (16-3), which seems to have it all put together … South Fork will count on two senior right-handers: Mike Nessel (3-2, 2.80), who went the distance in a March 2 win over Jupiter, and James Baggs (3-3, 2.33) in the tournament. Nick Cincotta (.500), Brian Woody (.444) and Jason Popovich (.425) anchor the lineup … Top-seeded Martin County has lots of pitching, led by Steven Fleming (4-2, 1.97, 38 K in 39 innings) and Josh Thorne (3-1, 2.00, 36 K in 28 innings). Offensively, James (.527) and Jeremy (.500) Vasquez, and Danny Hudzina (.500) have been three of the top hitters on the Treasure Coast. A.J. Fabrizio (.459) and Mark Savarese (.450) aren’t far behind … Martin County routed District 14-4A top seed Lincoln Park 11-1 Thursday … Port St. Lucie is led by Cory Reid (.500) and Jesse Arnold (2-1, 2.90) …. Sebastian River’s Gregg Spagnolia (.481) is tied for the T-Coast lead with 5 homers. The Sharks are 12-7.
Prediction: Martin County over South Fork.

DISTRICT 15-5A

Monday, April 25
Spanish River (5) vs. John I. Leonard (4) at Dwyer, 4
Palm Beach Lakes (8) at West Boca (1), 6:30
Lake Worth (7) at Dwyer (2), 7
Forest Hill (6) at Wellington (3), 7
Tuesday, April 26
Semifinals at Dwyer, 4 and 7
Thursday, April 28
Final at Dwyer, 7

Favorite: West Boca Raton.
Contenders: Wellington, Dwyer
Dark horse: John I. Leonard
Bracket breakdown: One of West Boca, Wellington and Dwyer will be sitting home, but likely not more than one. Click here for more about West Boca, click here for a more detailed look at Wellington, and click here for a scouting report on Dwyer … If John I Leonard needs inspiration, it can look at Dwyer. “Last year we were a five-seed, and we ended up making the championship,” Torre said. “Anyone can do it.” The Lancers have good arms, especially senior Devin Vargo, who nearly shut down West Boca in a February game, and lanky sophomore Noel Canete. Junior infielder Eddy Morel (.361) leads the team in hitting … Spanish River has two strikeout pitchers in Mike Chambers (38) and 6-foot-4 Chris England (32). Luca Rispoli has a 5-1 record and team-low 3.90 ERA. He also leads the Sharks in hitting (.373) … Wellington won’t have an easy time getting to Forest Hill ace Mike Murray, who is third among large school pitchers with 88 strikeouts. Jose Crespo leads large school hitters with a .500 average. Junior outfielder Jamal Martin (.417) is committed to Florida State.
Prediction: West Boca over Wellington.

DISTRICT 14-4A
Monday, April 25
Suncoast (5) at Fort Pierce Central (4), 4
Fort Pierce Westwood (6) at Jensen Beach (3), 6
Boynton Beach (7) at Okeechobee (2), 7
Tuesday, April 26
at Lawnwood Stadium, Fort Pierce
Semifinal, 4
Suncoast/Fort Pierce Central winner vs. Lincoln Park (1), 7
Thursday, April 28
Final, at Lawnwood

Favorite: Lincoln Park
Contenders: Okeechobee, Jensen Beach
Bracket breakdown: Florida State commit Gio Alfonso leads Lincoln Park, which should make a run to the finals. Alfonso (.400, 18 RBI) also plays an excellent shortstop … Okeechobee (15-8) is led offensively by Richard Donegan (.403) and Mark Weir (.352). Kevin Christensen (2-1, 1.68, 38 K in 25 innings) and Tyler Barber (5-0, 2.69) and Austin Hamilton (3-3, 3.00, 46 K in 42 innings) give the Brahmans plenty of pitching … Jensen Beach’s Artur Cary (.449) and Tyler Parker (.421) are tough outs … Suncoast is a young, scrappy team that made a run to the Lake Worth Tournament final, where it lost 8-6 to Summit Christian … Fort Pierce Central’s Vinnie Lucera (.562) is one of the Treasure Coast’s leading batters.
Prediction: Okeechobee over Lincoln Park

DISTRICT 15-4A

O.H./Pem. vs. Archbishop McCarthy (1), 7
Thursday, April 28
Final, 7

Favorite: Archbishop McCarthy
Bracket breakdown: Olympic Heights, which plays Trinity Christian at Roger Dean Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday, faces a rough road to get out of its All-Broward bracket. Defending Class 4A champion Archbishop McCarthy has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the country by Baseball America. “They’re ridiculous,” Olympic Heights coach Brian Domenico said. “A monster.” … Park Vista beat Archbishop McCarthy on the road April 12 … Two key wins for O. Heights: Behind freshman righty Ely Weldy, the Lions beat Cardinal Gibbons 7-3; sophomore Patrick Cahill beat Atlantic three weeks ago.
Prediction: Archbishop McCarthy over Cardinal Gibbons.

DISTRICT 13-3A
All games at St. Andrew’s
Tuesday, April 26
Clewiston (3) vs. Cardinal Newman (2), 12:30
Glades Central (4) vs. St. Andrew’s (1), 3:30
Thursday, April 28
Final, 3:30

Favorite: St. Andrew’s
Bracket breakdown: St. Andrew’s (19-4 overall, 5-1 district) had enough pitching and hitting to earn its first No. 1 seed in districts. Offensively, Danny Young leads all area batters average (.613) and homers (9), while Jack Sheehy (.581, 7 HR, 37 RBI) leads in RBI. Brothers Tim and Dan Stoops are headed to UMass and should pitch the Scots through the tournament. Dan (5-2, 1.79, 72 K in 39 innings) starts the semis, and Tim (7-1, 0.58, 80 K in 36.1 innings) will go if the Scots make it to the final … Cardinal Newman entered the week at 7-16 overall, but is 5-1 in the district and 1-1 against St. Andrew’s this season, including a 10-0 win on April 1 in which Jack English pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts. English has struck out 89 batters this season, best among small school pitchers. Junior catcher Shane Osborn (.444, 4 HR) powers the Crusaders offensively. He was selected as the FACA District 17, Class 3A player of the year … Cardinal Newman coach Jack Kokinda picked up his 700th career win last week against Clewiston. He was named FACA’s District 17, Class 3A coach of the year.
Prediction: St. Andrew’s over Cardinal Newman.

DISTRICT 13-2A

Monday, April 25
Glades Day (5) vs. Pope John Paul II (4) at Lynn University, 4
St. Edward’s (7) at King’s Academy (2), 4

Jupiter Christian (8) at American Heritage (1), 7
Tuesday, April 26
Semifinals at Bob Gladwyn, 7
Thursday, April 28
Final at Bob Gladwyn, 7

Favorite: American Heritage
Contenders: King’s Academy, John Carroll
Dark horse: Pope John Paul II
Bracket breakdown: American Heritage went unbeaten in the district (14-0, 19-3 overall entering the week) and it would be a shocker if it can’t win the tournament … Neither Stallions senior ace Billy Strode (7-0, .058, 55 K in 36.1 innings) nor junior No. 2 starter Dylan Arnold (5-0, 2.15, 48 K in 29.1 innings) took a loss in the regular season. Offensively, senior outfielder Shaquille Rolle (.346, 17 RBI), senior catcher Jacob O’Keefe (.404, 6 HR, 15 RBI), junior third baseman Jon Spada (.468), 6-foot-5 senior Alex Leighton (.443) and Strode (.385) have been regular contributors … O’Keefe was named FACA District 17, Class 2A player of the year. Coach Carm Mazza was named coach of the year … King’s Academy (15-8 entering the week) went to the regional final last year, and is led by switch-hitting junior catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (.429, 21 RBI), a Florida commit. Senior second baseman Ryan Krance (team-best .429 and 6 HR, 20 RBI), senior first baseman Mark Babrick (.362, 2 HR, team-high 23 RBI) and sophomore outfielder John Carpenter (.397) have had strong years at the dish. Senior ace Matt Leber (5-3, 2.76, 76 K in 53.1 innings) pitches the Lions’ biggest games … John Carroll (11-5, 7-3) has plenty of pitching, with sophomore Richard Harrell (6-0, 0.54, 26 K in 38.3 innings), sophomore Sterling Koerner (6-2, 1.47, 45 K in 51.1 innings) and senior Bo Samuel (3-4, 1.87, 28 K in 39 innings) hardly touched …. Pope John junior second baseman Robert Gerdung (.415) is a tough out … Glades Day junior first baseman Colton Coates and senior DH Tyler LeCroy hit .500 … Benjamin has had some growing pains, but three sophomores — outfielder Kody Ruedisili (.451), 6-foot-4 first baseman Jon Pavlov (.385, 3 HR) and right-hander D.J. Paone (35 K in 25.2 innings) — have stood out. Talented freshman lefty Bennett Sousa has battled back from injuries and looks healthy.
Prediction: American Heritage over King’s Academy.

DISTRICT 12-1A

Berean/Morningside (4) vs. Summit Christian (1), 1
Wellington Christian (3) vs. Community Christian (2), 4
Thursday, April 28
Final, 4

Favorite: Summit Christian
Contender: Community Christian
Bracket breakdown: Summit is the favorite, and not because of the volume of runs they’ve shown they can put up in mismatched games. The Saints have the district’s best pitcher in senior right-hander John Costa (5-1, 2.39, 71 K in 53 innings), who is committed to FIU. Junior lefty Sam Murphy (4-0, 3.22, 39 K in 36 innings) is a strong No. 2. Senior shortstop Timmy Williams (.407), sophomore Shane Swanson (.345, 4 HR, 27 RBI) and junior John Silviano power the lineup … Wellington Christian right-hander Robbie Pettett (4-3, 3.06, 67 K in 36.2 innings) has dominated in some starts … Wellington Christian improved from 4-7 to 9-11 while starting four middle-schoolers. “We call ourselves the Smurfs,” first-year coach Tim Ferguson said … Community Christian has good pitching in Tyler Smith (4-1, 3.69, 28 K in 24.2 innings), Alex Roberts (52 K) and Matt Bell (42 K). The Cougars get on base often and love to run, sparked by junior Jerome Jones (.557), senior Fendi Rolle (.459, 17 steals, 19 walks) and Smith (.448). They’ll be a tough draw for anyone.
Prediction: Summit Christian over Community Christian.

Softball: Palm Beach Gardens, Park Vista ranked in top 10 of new statewide poll

The new Miracle Sports class-by-class and statewide rankings came out late Saturday night, and there was a new member of the statewide all-classes poll.

The Post‘s top-ranked team, Palm Beach Gardens, moved into the all-classes poll as the No. 8 team. The Gators leapfrogged Park Vista, which stayed in the No. 10 spot, after Gardens narrowly edged out Park Vista for the District 9-6A title on Friday night. Here’s to hoping those two teams will meet again. Both games this year have been 1-0 thrillers decided by almost identical clutch hits, and both were won by Gardens.

Jupiter dropped entirely out of the Class 6A rankings and receiving-votes category. I guess the poll doesn’t rank eliminated teams, which doesn’t make much sense. Even with their early departure, the Warriors have to remain one of the top 6A teams in the state. They’re a victim of a tough district. Next year’s district will be even tougher, with Gardens, Jupiter, Wellington, Dwyer and Palm Beach Central each in one grouping.

Wellington moved up to sixth in the Class 5A poll, fresh off a District 15-5A title. American Heritage (2A) and Grandview Prep (1A) remained in the rankings as well, with both winning their district tournaments.

The pipeline into American Heritage is on, and it’s flowing. Former Cardinal Newman athlete Xavier Swinton became the latest player to transfer to American Heritage, switching to the Delray Beach school this week.

Swinton (6-0, 170) and Cardinal Newman coach Steve Walsh both confirmed the transfer. Swinton had 16 catches for 177 yards and one touchdown for Newman in the 2010 season.

He plays both offense and defense, making the Post All-Area second team as a defensive back.

Cardinal Newman standout lacrosse player Mike Mastracchio has signed his letter of intent to play at St. Leo University this fall.

Mastracchio was a Post All-Area honorable mention selection this spring. The senior helped Cardinal Newman reach the District 7 final, where the Crusaders lost to eventual state champion Benjamin.

St. Leo has won two of the past three Deep South Conference tournaments. It’s a Division II athletics program.

A look at the 2010 efficiency ratings for the area’s top returning quarterbacks

As we toil through the summer’s heat and seven-on-seven games, there’s no better time to break out some numbers from 2010 to at least get an idea of what to expect from the area’s top returning quarterbacks in 2011.

Lake Worth’s Evan Moore and Jupiter Christian’s Kedric Bostic put on good shows in their spring games, Cardinal Newman’s Brett Benes carried his team all the way to the Dolphins 7-on-7 finals and Jupiter’s Tyler Cameron has wowed recruiters on his summer tour of Division I colleges.

Of course, transfers like Travares Copeland, Tanner Redish and Shane Bussey are each expected to to make an impact at their new schools (Treasure Coast, Glades Central and Park Vista, respectively).. And young starters like juniors-to-be Kevin Anderson (Boca) and Larry Brihm (Village) posted respectable passer ratings, but more will expected of them this fall.

Anyway, using the NFL passer efficiency rating formula, here’s a breakdown of the underclassmen who took snaps last fall and will be back in 2011. They’re listed in order. (In the case of Anderson, Cameron and Redish, remember, they each missed time with injuries in 2010.)

The winner of last year’s efficiency contest would’ve been Dwyer QB Jacoby Brissett, who posted a whopping 136 rating. Glades Central’s stand-in quarterback Mario Rowley had a 112.1 rating.

Kedric Bostic (Jupiter Christian)
Rating: 134.2
Stats: 80-124, 1,354 yards, 18 TDs, 2 INTs

Travares Copeland (Treasure Coast, played for Ft. Pierce Westwood in 2010)
Rating: 114.9
Stats: 47-98, 982 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INTs

Shane Bussey (Park Vista, played for King’s in 2010)
Rating: 109.6
Stats: 93-171, 1,514 yards, 18 TDs, 4 INTs

Evan Moore (Lake Worth)
Rating: 108.5
Stats: 136-237, 2.083 yards, 30 TDs, 10 INTs

Brett Benes (Cardinal Newman)
Rating: 106.1
Stats: 80-134, 1,226 yards, 14 TDs, 6 INTs

Marcus Davis (American Heritage)
Rating: 95.4
Stats: 87-151, 1,180 yards, 12 TDs, 5 INTs

Larry Brihm (Village Academy)
Rating: 89.5
Stats: 27-71, 675 yards, 9 TDs, 4 INTs

Kevin Anderson (Boca Raton)
Rating: 87.5
Stats: 86-163, 1,342 yards, 11 TDs, 6 INTs

Tyler Cameron (Jupiter)
Rating: 74.5
Stats: 52-99, 821 yards, 7 TDs, 7 INTs

Tanner Redish (Glades Central, played for Glades Day in 2010)
Rating: 71.4
Stats: 58-126, 1.017 yards, 9 TDs, 8 INTs

Summer football stock report: Atlantic up, Glades Central down

$

This is a new feature I want to try this fall: a stock report each week detailing the rising, falling or maintaining of teams, players and other topics. With so much going on in the offseason, from team camps and combines to 7-on-7 tournaments and spring games, why don’t we take stock of some big names and teams?

THE CLIMBERS
These are teams and players whose stock has risen this summer because of impressive performances.

Receiver Chad Ward has had a breakout offseason for Atlantic.

Receiver Chad Ward has had a breakout offseason for Atlantic.

Atlantic: The Eagles put on an impressive defensive performance in an otherwise sloppy spring game against highly talented Glades Central. They followed that up with an impressive run in the Brandon Flowers 7-on-7 tournament this past weekend. There are still areas with plenty of room for improvement, mainly the offensive line and quarterbacks, but Atlantic has the talent to be very dangerous this fall.

Tyler Cameron: The Jupiter quarterback has been followed by hype everywhere he’s gone since he was a freshman, but a season-ending throwing-shoulder injury has healed and he’s impressed enough college coaches to rack up close to 20 verbal scholarship offers this offseason.

John I. Leonard: The Lancers were 5-6 last year and made the playoffs, thanks in large part to bruising running back Marlin Joseph. Having lost its three backfield starters from last fall, including Joseph, Leonard looked like it would be headed back to the drawing board with a young team. Instead, Leonard topped Centennial 21-7 in the spring game, impressed observers at the Dolphins 7-on-7 and built on that with an appearance in the finals of the Brandon Flowers 7-on-7.

Also up: Village Academy receiver Devonte Robinson, who committed to WVU this week, and Cardinal Newman, which made a surprise run all the way to the finals of the Dolphins 7-on-7 tournament. Suncoast has had an impressive few months under new coach Jessie Hester.

THE STABILIZERS
This is a group that just keeps doing what it’s doing.

Speedy Gary Holmes is a big reason why Seminole Ridge should be good -- again.

Speedy Gary Holmes is a big reason why Seminole Ridge should be good -- again.

Seminole Ridge: There’s no question the Hawks have become one of the model programs in the area. They win every season, they’re well coached and they’ve got a development program producing young talent regularly each season. They impressed at the UCF team camp and blew out what should be a very athletic Treasure Coast team in the spring game. But none of this should surprise anyone.

Dwyer: It’s a similar situation to Seminole Ridge, though Dwyer has done it for a while longer. The Panthers appear to have reloaded after losing a handful of Division I players after last season. Young athlete Clinton Stephens has burst onto the recruiting scene, and two of the Panthers’ top rising seniors, Bobby Puyol and Julian Whigham, each committed to BCS schools this week (UConn and Syracuse, respectively). Just par for the course.

Also cruising: Glades Day and Jupiter Christian appear to have all the tools and talent necessary to, well, keep doing what they do: win games and beat each other up in the postseason. In terms of players, the county’s new “Big 3″ seems to have taken shape, with Gardens’ Avery Young, Boynton’s Jessamen Dunker and Palm Beach Central’s Angelo Jean-Louis consistently being ranked among the top prospects in the nation. No shockers there.

THE DROPPERS
This is a spot where we’ll discuss teams struggling a little bit.

Will Likely is one of Glades Central's game-changers.

Will Likely is one of Glades Central's game-changers.

Glades Central: The Raiders entered the offseason as the early favorites for the 2011 season, but the transition to a new quarterback and coaching staff hasn’t gone as smoothly as they’d hoped. The Raiders struggled in the second day of the Dolphins 7-on-7 tournament, losing to Immokalee. That followed their spring-game loss to Atlantic, where their offensive line looked porous.

American Heritage: With a roster as talented as any in the county — with as many athletes as the Stallions have — there’ve been some disappointing performances in 7-on-7 action. Not that the glorified scrimmages give us a ton of insight into how a team will be with its pads on, but Heritage has so much talent that you just feel like the Stallions should dominate. And they haven’t. But like Glades Central, the idea that Heritage is “dropping” comes from the high expectations we have for them.

Also dropping: Gardens lost its spring game 56-7 against Fort Pierce Central, a shocking result for a team that has quality talent at several positions. After making the playoffs last year, Wellington appears to be in for a long season after a 48-7 drubbing this spring at the hands of King’s Academy.
